Employee Safety at Zanzibar

Zanzibar adheres to a "safety first" approach, consistently meeting or surpassing legislative requirements and standards in British Columbia.

The safety of our employees is our top priority, and we take pride in our comprehensive safety approach that sets the industry standard. Here are some key highlights of our commitment to employee safety.

Zanzibar’s priority is to ensure the health and safety of all employees and persons in our workplace. Zanzibar Holdings is committed to recognizing and supporting The Health and Safety Accord of the British Columbia Forest Industry. The Accord is a guiding factor in the training and education for all of our employees.

It shall be the responsibility of Zanzibar owners, managers, and supervisors to consult and cooperate with both regulators and the Licensee on issues relating to the health and safety of employees or persons working in the Contractor’s workplace. Owners will ensure that that all project leads, supervisors and sub-contractors follow the health and safety program and all applicable regulations, and owners will provide all resources required to maintain safety in the workplace. Owners, project leads, and supervisors will provide training, remedy any conditions that are hazardous to the health and safety of employees, and provide employees with the information, instruction, training, and supervision necessary to ensure their safety and health while carrying out their duties. Owners, managers, and supervisors will periodically meet for the purpose of reviewing health and safety activities, incident trends, and for the determination of necessary course of action associated with the contractors’ safety program.

It shall be the responsibility of every supervisor to ensure the health and safety of every employee and sub-contractor under their supervision. The project lead, and supervisors will ensure they are knowledgeable regarding the applicable WCB Act and regulations and company safety program. The project lead shall ensure that each worker is adequately trained in the safe performance of his or her duties, and periodically observe the workplace for unsafe or unhealthy work practice or work conditions, and will assist in developing action plans/procedures to remedy such situations.

Zanzibar is committed to the use of an injury management program that is aimed at preventing injuries by assisting workers in managing the earliest signs of strain, and helping workers return to their regular duties as quickly and safely as possible whenever they are injured.

It shall be the responsibility of every employee, and subcontractor to carry out his or her work in accordance with the established safety program. They will take care in ensuring the health and

safety of themselves as well as the fellow workers around them. Employees will refuse to work in; and report any known conditions that may be hazardous to the health and safety of all employees and persons working in the company operations and will co-operate with fellow employees, project leads, regulators and the Licensee to work toward an accident free workplace.

The purpose of this policy is to outline Zanzibar’s approach to addressing workplace bullying, sexual harassment, assault, discrimination and any violation to the Human Rights Code, and to establish a “zero tolerance” policy for such behavior. All Zanzibar employees will be treated in a fair and respectful manner.

Zanzibar has a duty to take reasonable care to protect the health, safety and well-being of its workers, and as a result, must take all reasonable steps to prevent where possible, or otherwise minimize, bullying, harassment, discrimination, assault, violence or infractions of the Human Rights Code in the workplace.

Operations Managers, Project Leads and Supervisors have a responsibility to provide a safe work environment for everyone.

Zanzibar has a zero tolerance policy with consideration to Violence, Bullying, or Harassment of any kind offenders may be dismissed without warning.

You can report to Zanzibar directly about any health and safety or harrassment issues that you have while working on our contracts.

Western Forestry Contractors Associations

Zanzibar is an industry leader in health and safety standards within the tree planting and silviculture industry.

We are a SAFE certified company and take the safety of our workers very seriously.

Zanzibar has been involved with the base audit certification since the inception of the program.

Zanzibar has developed an injury management program in an effort to minimize the number of working days lost to injury and assist workers in returning to work as soon as safely and as quickly as possible.

Our goal is to help workers take steps to manage the earliest signs of strain or physical breakdown, to prevent injuries from developing. Zanzibar will support workers in restructuring their shifts and work times to provide optimal rest and recovery, and provide free camp costs or accommodations to workers that feel the need for recovery time.

“Rest Day/ Know

your body best day”. Workers can request days off based on personal discretion and preferences, but this should not be linked to potential work-related injuries or specific symptoms related to physical impact of the job.

Zanzibar is partnered with Total Physio, an industry leader in understanding the mechanics of tree planting and helping injured planters get back to work in a timely and safe manner. We have implemented a prophylactic taping program through Total Physio to help reduce occurrence of RSI injuries.

Training consists of two fundamental steps

Step One: Provision of training

Step Two: Verification of competency

All training includes providing information to the employee and making them familiar with company policies and procedures. Some training (such as driving and ATV operation) also requires in-person demonstration and

evaluation.

Training involves showing employees how to perform specific tasks, preparing them for specific conditions or situations, and taking steps to ensure they understand and are competent to perform the job safely. Different job titles have different training needs, which are identified in their Occupational Responsibilities.

Driver Training

Driving is the most dangerous part of forest work, Zanzibar will take every step to ensure the safety of its drivers and their passengers.

Drivers undergo approved courses such as the Resource Road Driver program and must perform daily vehicle safety checks. This ensures equipment is fit for work and allows for maintenance to be completed in a timely manner.

Planter Training

All employees undergo preseason training and participate in annual off-season online orientations. Project Leads hold annual meetings to provide updates on our health and safety program, industry standards, and company goals.

Management Training

Zanzibar prioritizes safety in training primary operators involved in supervision, driving, ATV operation, and chainsaw operation. Our involvement in the BCFSC/WFCA Silviculture Safety Training reflects our commitment to exceeding industry standards.

Zanzibar Holdings actively encourages all employees to increase their levels of education to assist them in succeeding in the workplace and making it a safer environment

Employees will be encouraged to complete courses including (but not limited to) the following:

First aid

Danger tree assessment

WHMIS

S-100 firefighting

ATV /UTV operation courses

Total Physio Taping Courses

Bulling and Harassment in the workplace

Leadership courses aimed at forestry and silviculture employees

Resource Road Driving course

EAO (Employers Advisory Office) seminars and training- (JOHSC, Investigation, Management,)

Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee

The purpose of the Occupational Health and Safety Committee is to supply a source of critical review for health and safety practices in the workplace and to safeguard the workers’ right to participate in the development and maintenance of safe work policies. The committee is a joint body made up of worker and employer representatives.

The committee’s function is to identify

and resolve health and safety problems at the workplace, during transportation to and from the worksite, and around camp. The members must bear in mind that the committee is not a policy making body but rather an advisory group.

Zanzibar has adapted its committee to meet the flexible needs created by the frequent movement of workers between numerous short-term operations. It is not possible to guarantee consistent attendance of the same individuals on monthly basis for committee meetings due to the frequent movement of workers between locations, and the short duration of employment contracts.

Therefore, a single committee with a large pool of membership spread throughout all of the crews in the company will be utilized to enable monthly committee meetings throughout the year. Each

crew will have committee members.

Sub-Committees are developed within JOHSC such as Driving Sub-committee, and Personal Conduct Sub-committee. These have been developed to allow for more focus being allowed for these portions of the Zanzibar Health and Safety Plan.

Zanzibar subscribes to TEAAM services for all planting operations. TEAAM stands for, Technical Evacuation Advanced Aero Medical Society and is an advanced life support Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS) that responds to remote, wilderness and industrial work settings in BC.

TEAAM is our Emergency Response Plan  provider for all critical life incidents that occur in the field.

We believe that safety is not just a practice, it's a company wide culture. Our ongoing commitment to training, certification, and proactive safety measures ensures a secure and productive work environment for everyone.
